NEW MAGS - LOS ANGELES: A pictorial history of the City of Angels

From the first known photograph taken in Los Angeles to today's grand panoramas, this photo-historical tribute to the City of Angels offers a fascinating insight into the city's cultural, political, industrial, and sociological history. The book traces Los Angeles's development from the 1880s real estate boom, through the early days of Hollywood, and the urbanization of the late 20th century, right up to the present.

With over 500 photos, the book shows how LA rose from a desert landscape to a sprawling city full of palm trees and urban areas. World news such as two Olympics, the assassination of Bobby Kennedy and the Rodney King riots highlight the city's many facets. Hollywood and its celebrities, as well as other famous residents, personalities, architects, artists and musicians, are also presented. The city's pop cultural movements, music, surfing, health and food trends, gangs and hot rods are included, as well as notorious criminal cases.

The book presents Los Angeles in all its glory and rawness through hundreds of newly discovered images, including works by Julius Shulman, Garry Winogrand, William Claxton, and many other outstanding photographers, drawn from major historical archives, museums, private collections, and universities. The texts are complemented by essays by renowned California historian Kevin Starr and Los Angeles literature expert David L. Ulin, who give the images context and depth.
